ABOUT US

The Potawatomi Fire are the first professional basketball team owned by a Native American tribe (Citizen Potawatomi Nation) in Oklahoma. The Fire were founded in 2021 and played their first season in 2022. The Fire compete in the Central Conference of The Basketball League (TBL), a men’s professional basketball league, now with nearly 40 teams across the U.S. and Canada. Along with winning back-to-back TBL championships in 2023 and 2024, the Fire organization was named the 2022 winner of the Jim Koch Award as TBL’s Best Ran Business.

The Potawatomi Fire are excited to continue to bring high energy exciting basketball to the heart of Oklahoma at the FireLake Arena.

Mission:

The mission of the Potawatomi Fire is to provide the community with a first-class basketball experience that is affordable, entertaining, and showcases the talent of the best athletes the league has to offer, while simultaneously developing each player’s skill level. Off the court, the Potawatomi Fire will work with local youth to provide health, education, and career mentorship, building a positive impact with members of the community.

John A. Barrett, Jr. is a native of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and a graduate of Shawnee High School. His Potawatomi name is Keweoge, meaning “He leads them home.” Chairman Barrett has served as an elected official for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation since 1973 when he was first elected as Vice-Chairman. Tribal Chairman since 1985, Barrett is the eighth generation of his family to serve in elected office for his Tribe. Under his leadership, the Nation has gone from having assets totaling just $550 and less than three acres of land to an entity having an economic impact exceeding $550 million.

During Chairman Barrett’s administration, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation has experienced more than 15 percent average annual growth for more than 20 consecutive years. With more than 2,500 employees, Citizen Potawatomi Nation is the largest employer in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. He serves as the Chief Executive of the Tribe, presiding over the 16-member Tribal Legislature that enacts the laws and ordinances under which it is governed. His elected position as Tribal Chairman also requires him to direct the tribe’s administrative functions and commercial activities. He was instrumental in the creation and adoption of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation’s current constitution and statutes which have led to the Nation’s extended period of stability and progress.

He has guest lectured at Harvard University for the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development and as a guest lecturer at the Banff Center in Banff, Alberta, Canada to the assembled Canadian First Nations on the same topics. He serves on the International Advisory Council of the Native Nations Institute was founded by the Morris Udall Foundation at the University of Arizona and the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development. He served as a delegate of the United States Federally Recognized Tribes to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples at The Hague, Switzerland, which provided the International Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People approved by the United Nations Committee on Human Rights and the United Nations General Assembly.

David J. Qualls

General Manager

Potawatomi Fire General Manager David J. Qualls is a native of Tecumseh, Oklahoma. He has worked in the music, entertainment, and gaming industry for more than 30 years. Qualls brings a vast amount of creative abilities to FireLake Arena as its director, which blends well with the mission of the Potawatomi Fire program.

Additionally, Qualls privately owns various small businesses that work simultaneously with the gaming and entertainment industry. He also previously held elected positions as a city mayor, school board member, and trade association president.

As the current general manager for the Potawatomi Fire, Qualls and his experience serve as valuable off-the-court assets for the team and its team market owner, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Qualls is excited to bring the Potawatomi Fire to Shawnee and the surrounding Oklahoma communities to introduce The Basketball League as well as its talent and enthusiasm.

Head Coach

Mark Dannhoff is in his fourth year as the head coach of the Potawatomi Fire.

With over 30 years of experience, Dannhoff is a proven, motivated, and experienced “Program Builder” with a history of successfully revitalizing and building basketball programs as a head and assistant coach, doing so with integrity, class, and a championship vision. He possesses a prominent level of competitiveness, dedication, and commitment to success.

In just five seasons as a head coach at the professional level, Coach Dannhoff has a regular season record of 80 – 8 (90.9% winning percentage), 27 – 3 Playoff record (90% winning percentage), and an overall record of 107 – 11 (90.6% winning percentage). In addition, coach Dannhoff has guided his teams to four regular season conference championships, four conference playoff finals appearances, three conference finals championships, three regional championships, and back-to-back-to-back (2023, 2024, & 2025) TBL National Championships, becoming the first team in TBL to achieve this feat. Coach Dannhoff became the first TBL coach to be named TBL Coach of the Year three straight years (2023, 2024, & 2025).

As head coach of the Fire, Dannhoff has coached two TBL MVPs (Chuck Guy-2024 & 2025), two 6th Man of the Year winners (Ricardo Artis II-2024 & KT Bouchum-2025), a Defensive Player of the Year (Guy-2023), three playoff MVPs (Deshawn Munson-2023 & 2024, Guy-2023, Artis II-2025), and three All Stars (Guy-2023 & 2024, Munson-2023).

Coach Dannhoff began his professional career in 2021 when he was named head coach of the Enid Outlaws for the 2022 TBL season. In his first season as a professional head coach, Dannhoff guided Enid to a regular season Central Conference Championship and a first-round bye in the TBL Playoffs with a 20-4 record. The Outlaws advanced to the Central Conference Finals only to fall short in the third game of the best of three series, finishing the season 23-6. In addition, the Outlaws finished first in the conference for fewest points allowed per game and tied for sixth overall out of forty-four teams in the TBL during the regular season.

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Coach Dannhoff spent 30+ years as an assistant at the collegiate level. He has been an assistant on eight NCAA Division I coaching staffs, including Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Georgia State, and Tulane.

Kendrick Bryson

Assistant Coach

Kendrick Bryson enters the 2026 TBL season as the new assistant coach of the Potawatomi Fire.

Bryson played collegiately at Howard College and West Texas A&M University before his playing career was cut short due to a major knee injury. Following a long rehab, he was offered an opportunity to play professionally overseas, but the day before departing he re-injured his knee leading him into coaching.

As a coach, Bryson has extensive experience at multiple levels. He has coached at numerous high schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex as both an assistant and head coach. Bryson also has experience in The Basketball League, serving as the head coach of the Texas 7ers for three seasons. Currently, along with his duties with the Fire, Bryson serves as the Athletic Director and head basketball coach at Poetry Community Christian School in Terrell, Texas where he was just named Coach of the Year for Class 2A TAPPS District 4.

Beyond coaching, Bryson is also a professional skills trainer, running the Eli7e Individuals Skills program for the last 17 years. Through Eli7e, Bryson has worked with numerous NBA, WNBA, and international professionals.

A native of West Texas, Bryson now lives in the DFW Metroplex with his wife Katie and their three kids.

Potawatomi Fire Trainer Taylor Williams

Taylor Williams, M.S., LAT, ATC

Head Athletic Trainer

Taylor is a proud local from Tecumseh, Oklahoma. She started her academic and athletic training journey at Seminole State College where she obtained her associate degree in health science while working with men’s basketball and volleyball. She continued her education at the University of Oklahoma.  

While at the University of Oklahoma, Taylor worked as an athletic training student with track & field, tennis, and football. She graduated with her bachelor’s in exercise science with a minor in psychology in 2019. She finished her education at the University of Central Oklahoma and graduated with her master’s in athletic training in 2021. Taylor is an SSM Health athletic trainer that is contracted to the Potawatomi Fire. 

Taylor’s favorite thing about athletic training is being able to be with an athlete from the initial injury to their return to the court. She is dedicated to keeping Fire athletes safe and healthy. She’s excited to be part of this brand new basketball program built from the ground up minutes from her hometown.

Justin Phillips

Team Chiropractor

Dr. Justin Phillips is entering his fourth season as the team chiropractor for the Potawatomi Fire.

Dr. Phillips has practiced chiropractics for over 25 years. He earned his associates degree from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1996 before completing his bachelor’s degree and earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Parker University’s College of Chiropractics in 1999.

Beyond his work with the Fire, Dr. Phillips owns and operates Central Oklahoma Chiropractic Clinic in Tecumseh.

Chris Cox Potawatomi Fire

Chris Cox

Dir. of Communications/Play-by-Play

Chris Cox joined the Fire prior to their first year in 2022 while working as the News and Sports Director for CPN-owned KGFF Radio (1450 AM/100.9 FM).

Cox is a seasoned broadcaster that has worked as the play-by-play voice for the Shawnee Wolves on KGFF since 2010. He has also called games for several small colleges and has broadcast multiple sports including football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball. Cox has also had the opportunity to call numerous playoff games in his career and has been on the mic for five championship teams: the Potawatomi Fire in 2023, 2024 and 2025, Shawnee High School Wolves baseball in 2017, and the Shawnee Lady Wolves basketball in 2012.

In his role with the Fire, Cox leads the communications strategy to keep the community and TBL informed of what the Fire are doing on and off the court. He can also be heard on TBLTV and KGFF Radio broadcasting every Fire game, home and away.

Cox, a native of Carrollton, Texas, is a 2009 graduate of Oklahoma Christian University with a degree in broadcast journalism. Chris, his wife Kilee (m. 2009), and their two kids live in Edmond.
